Website Speed and Core Web Vitals: Why They Actually Affect Your Google Ranking

"Make my site faster" usually comes up after a client already suspects something's wrong — traffic that doesn't convert, a bounce rate that looks too high, or a developer mentioning "Core Web Vitals" in a report they didn't fully explain. Here's what those numbers actually mean, and why they're worth fixing beyond just looking good in a report.

What Core Web Vitals Actually Measure

Google boils page experience down to three specific measurements, not a vague "speed score":

Google measures these from real visitor data, not just a lab test — so a slow experience for actual users on actual connections is what gets penalized, not just a number in a testing tool.

Why Google Cares About This At All

Google's business is people trusting search results enough to keep using Google. A result that leads to a slow, janky page is a bad outcome for that visitor, and Google has said plainly that page experience is a ranking factor — not the biggest one, content and relevance still matter more, but it's a real tiebreaker between you and a competitor with similar content and a faster site.

There's a second, bigger effect that has nothing to do with rankings directly: slow sites lose visitors before they ever see what you offer. A page that takes several seconds to show anything loses a meaningful share of visitors who simply leave — traffic you paid for or earned through SEO, gone before your message even loaded.

What Actually Slows Sites Down

Rule of thumb: if your homepage takes more than 2-3 seconds to show something meaningful on a phone over regular mobile data, you're losing visitors before your message ever reaches them — regardless of what your ranking looks like.

Where to Start

Google's own PageSpeed Insights tool (free, just paste in your URL) will score your site on all three metrics and flag the specific issues. For most small business sites, image optimization and trimming unused scripts fix the majority of the problem without touching a line of custom code. Sites built on heavier platforms or with years of accumulated plugins usually need a more structural cleanup — that's when it's worth having someone actually look at what's loading and why.

Speed isn't a vanity number to chase for its own sake. It's the difference between a visitor actually reading what you built the site to say, and a visitor who left before it finished loading.
